DJ Profiles: Zoe Hulina
Zoe Hulina enjoys keeping matters light on her show, Dark Roast Radio. Zoe uncovered her inherent passion for radio in her senior year of high school when she signed herself up for a one-hour block show “just for fun.” Fast forward a few years, we can see her love for music and radio is still evident. Zoe joined the Big Heavy World as a radiator DJ just short of a year ago and has created a dynamic space for her listeners to tune into on Thursdays from 7pm-9pm. The catchy three-word title came about out of circumstance, when Zoe’s friend remarked simply, “just call it Dark Roast Radio;” so she did. The exciting, exuberant energy that Zoe brings to her show is representative of her personality, which she also enjoys sharing with her audience.
Zoe grew up listening to, what some might call, stereotypical “pop” music, but has always appreciated exploring other genres. She has a soft side for Top 40 artists and has always wanted to uncover the nuanced details of artists and their histories, a curiosity she carries confidently into her own show. When selecting music, Zoe looks to keep a consistent, upbeat sound for her listeners, cultivating a dynamic and exciting atmosphere to keep things fresh. She is an avid lover of new music and enjoys looking through her Spotify Discover Weekly playlist to fuel ideas for her own show. In between songs, Zoe might provide commentary on details or small facts about the artists or songs she plays.
Zoe unabashedly allows the rawest form of herself to shine through in her show. She enjoys sharing pieces of her identity and her love for music with the world, all while keeping things light and jovial. Tuning into her show is, without a doubt, an eclectic and eccentric experience that radiates positivity and passion.
