Take a spiritual and culinary journey to Northeastern Brazil as food studies scholar Scott Barton invites you into the kitchen of his friends, visual artist Ayrsen Heráclito and chef Pai de Santo Joceval Santos.

June is one of the most festive seasons in Brazil, a period known as Festa Junina or São João (St. John). Those who are practitioners of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé will be honoring some of their oldest orixás or deities through the preparation of special foods. Mungunzá, also known as canjica, is one of the most popular dishes served during the celebrations: a corn and sweet coconut treat you can have for breakfast, dessert, or any time of day.
