On Wednesday, December 2nd, Jacob Green joined Genevieve Rossi on the Rocket Shop Radio Hour to deliver some traveling tunes. Originally from Wisconsin, Green has spent years traveling across the country as both a one-man band and part of an ensemble, playing hundreds of shows a year before finally settling down here in Vermont three years ago. On this week's radio hour, he gave us an amazing performance as a one-man band.
“I’m gonna ease into it,” he said as he kicked it off with his first song of the night, an easy foot-tapping tune. He is skilled in many instruments, learning the violin as a kid and picking up others such as guitar, harmonica, and tambourine along the way. Green was in multiple bands in his novice years but eventually decided to go solo in 2012.
Green explains that he's always been obsessed with songwriters and that at the early age of ten, he began writing some of his own. Eventually, he got to the folky acoustic roots sound we hear today. Some of the driving inspirations behind his unique sound are legends such as Johnny Cash and Ben Harper. “I try to be influenced by as many different styles and artists as possible,” he explained.
The second song of the night was the title track off of Green’s latest album, Little Courage. The album is a culmination of one-man band tracks and full band tracks all with a live sound. “I try to capture the moment,” he said of his recording process. Green has put out two professional albums since the start of his solo career, but he has a large back catalog of diamonds in the rough from his years of travel. “I never write anything to be on anything,” he shared. “When a song comes to me it's the melody, the chorus, and maybe a verse. I never force the rest of the song to come.”
Green has always written about things that matter to him. He reveals that he wrote the song March Against Monsanto protesting against Monsanto organizations, and he even performed at many protests in his early days as a traveling musician. He now keeps his music close to home, performing for his daughter, a big fan of all things music.
During the unique year of 2020, Green has been recording a lot of new tracks and doing some live-streamed shows here and there from his home studio. He is excited for Jeezum Crow festival 2021 where he will be performing next year. As for traveling, Green plans to plant some roots here in the Green Mountains for a while.
The night is closed with Green’s final song, Good Spirit, an uplifting tune that is very applicable to the year we’ve had, about keeping a bright outlook in the hard times.
