On Wednesday, November 11, 2020, The Lemon Flyers joined host Tom Proctor on the Rocket Shop radio hour for a jam-sesh and a dose of indie rock. The Lemon Flyers is made up of four members, three of whom are brothers. Together the band contributes their one-of-a-kind indie/rock and roll sound to the local Vermont rock scene.

“I think we try to play some nice rock and roll,” The Lemon Flyers said when asked about their music style. Having been described as “straightforward rock and roll” in the past, their first album, Find a Way (2019), was grounded in rock. Their laid-back vibe has evolved over the past year into an indie/rock/psychedelic music style, which we heard on the radio hour as the first songs of the night were from the band’s upcoming album.

“We really came into our own in this one,” the band said to Proctor about their second album, out for release on December 12, 2020. In contrast to their debut album, Find a Way (2019), their sophomore album will be longer and will have a new feel for exploratory music genres. The band revealed in the radio hour that the first album allowed them to dip their toes in the water of recording music. In the new album, The Lemon Flyers nailed it down. We can expect to hear a new world of songwriting, song development, and depth for the musical group.

“The family tree gets so weird,” the band says about their unique band dynamic. The Kavanagh crew is made up of brothers Matt, Sawyer, and Alex. Adding to the brotherhood is Pat Buono. A couple of years ago, Alex and Buono met as co-workers and discovered the potential of their musical chemistry. Upon Buono’s initiation to the band, the Kavanagh brothers found their missing link, propelling the band into a new wave of indie/psychedelic/rock.

“Simplicity is power in songwriting,” the band agreed. In the upcoming album, member Pat Buono will debut a poignant selection of songs exploring the emotion of the band. During their interview with Proctor, the band highlighted how much the songs meant to them from that point where they were in their lives. But the album also has some silly songs, made for friends. Keeping things simple and loose is where The Lemon Flyers feel most comfortable.

“Don’t practice too much, but practice enough so you know the chords” is the approach The Lemon Flyers take when recording and performing tracks. Carrying this approach over into the new album, all of the tracks on both albums are live with the exception of a tweak here and there. The laid-back, rock mentality of the group shows the synergy and undeniable connection they have with one another. This is essential to uphold the authenticity of their music while keeping the brotherhood alive.
