The Flynn Presents Hurly Burly!
Higher Ground introduced the drive-in music experience to Burlington. Scores of vehicles lined in rows to enjoy an evening show during the dog days of summer—like a flashback from the 1950s.
But what if the elements of the scene were flipped?
The Flynn will be presenting their new live music experience this Saturday: the drive-around music experience. Officially titled Hurly Burly, the concert series features a flatbed truck as a stage and a new artist each day. The dates and artists have been revealed (and we’ve listed them below), but the Flynn is keeping the locations a secret until the day of. The locations will be announced on their social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. So give them a follow and keep your eyes peeled for updates.
That said, you can be certain that the concerts will take place in public spaces, social distancing rules will be enforced with chalk circles and signs, and masks will be mandatory.
“We always say we’re more than just a building, and now that our building is closed, we have a chance to prove it. If people can't come to the arts, then we’ll bring the arts to the people, and we’ll do it as safely as possible,” said Flynn Artistic Director Steve MacQueen. "We want the series to focus largely on voices of color in our community in order to reinforce the Flynn’s commitment to equity and anti-racist practices. I love this group of artists, and I am really excited to see how the whole hare-brained scheme works out.”
There’s a concert almost every weekend until the end of September, so there’s a lot to check out! The days and artists are as follows: Ray Vega and his Latin jazz quartet on August 15, Matthew Evan Taylor on August 16, Ro Freeman on August 22, Vermont Symphony Orchestra and Lyric on August 23, Kerubo on September 12, Burlington Taiko on September 13, Mal Maiz on September 19, and Dwight and Nicole with DBR on September 20.
And remember to bring your masks and your best dancing shoes!
