Word up, merry mountaineers. Spring is coming sooner than you think. Write to us and let us know what you're up to, or down to, or over to. You know what we mean. Lots of happenings in the Queen City. New album we predicted from The Fags has been rocking our works. And the Dysfunkshun disc is awesome but way too short! More more more! What are you listening to? We’re king of weird about competitions involving musicians, but something kind of cool happened at the first annual Burlington Acoustic Guitar Contest, sponsored by our good friends at Advance Music, Ovation Guitar, Sam Adams and WIZM, when nine-months-and-a-day pregnant KATE BARCLAY won out over a crowded field of acoustic pickers on November 19 at Club Metronome. A week later, Katie and her husband Glenn became proud parents of a 7.7 oz baby boy. Hand that kid the twelve string, will ya ? STARLIGHT CONSPIRACY got a hot-damn back-slapping review from VIP college music trade CMJ. Last Vermont band to get one that good was WIDE WAIL, and they just negotiated a production deal with big-shot producer Paul Fox (PHISH.) We heard that JAMIE MASEFIELD & THE JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT has been recording their debut album out at Dan Archer’s studio, and that is very exciting news. They played the Kitchen Factory in NYC recently, and speaking of that very cool performance pace, PHISH guy TREY ANASTASIO will allegedly be unveiling his new album there this spring. Vermont’s Phinest have been at Bearsville recording, where Trey also took THE PANTS to produce a recent recording of three songs for demo purposes. The songs sound great but unfortunately at this time there are no plans to release them to the public…insert collective sigh here. Bug ‘em, maybe they’ll change their minds. Local legend DAVID KAMM has been out at Eclipse Recording working on the never ending solo album, now that FAMOUS POTATO is RIP. We’ve had an early, unreleased album of his for a long time and let me tell you if there is any justice, this man will have a very long career. His latest project is called CONSTRUCTION JOE and also includes Potato bassist/singstress NICOLE VALCOUR. There are a lot of bands dashing around town right now recording songs for the upcoming Good Citizen BURLINGTON DOES BURLINGTON covers album. The artist formerly known as SLUSH captures their killer remake of a BLACK HAIRY TONGUE song live at Toast. “JOHNNY VERMONT” recorded a KEN SLEEPS NAKED song Low Tech, while KEN SLEEPS NAKED covered PINHEAD live at Montpelier's City Hall on New Years eve. An outfit called MAGIS did an INVISIBLE JET song at Low Tech, and CHIN HO! And DYSFUNKSHUN went out to Eclipse to do obscure folkie NICK FUSE and CHIN HO! respectively . Weird things are happening. JALAPENO BROTHERS hit Low tech for their MARTIN GUIGUI cover, and MARTIN GUIGUI stayed home to work on his N-ZONES song. If we’re hearing correctly BLUES FOR BREAKFAST went to both Eclipse and low Tech to do their JONESES thing. Surf-lounge mega gods BARBACOA have been working on an ENVY song at the Monastery. And STEVE BLAIR and ANDY HILDEBRANDT of the bands FREEFALL and SCIENCE FIXON have recorded an incredible jazz version of The Artist Formerly Known as SLUSH’S “Kill Your Idols.” These bands are just the tip of the Burlington iceberg folks. There are a whole bunch more folks involved like K-NINE, HEXDUMP, JASON DUNN, CRUSHED , and, uh, well…more. Lats more. And we’ll be unveiling these songs once a week on the GOOD CITIZEN RADIO HOUR. Every Sunday night on WIZN. 106.7 FM, at ELEVEN. That’s PM, of course. And then we’ll see you at CLUB TOAST in Burlington on May 2 and 3 for the PARTY TO END ALL PARTIES. BURLINGTON DOES BURLINGTON. Same times as our parties last year, remember? What else? Eclipse reports ROCKETSLED recording their MADELINES cover out there in Hinesburg and THE PANTS are doing their PHISH song (“Golgi Apparatus”) with the wonderful folks down at NOTEWORTHY STUDIO in Granville. Our pals SPIDER AVE recorded with Kate and Roger recently and said that it sounds great…although I believe that we’re still waiting for Andru and Jeanne to send us a copy. Slackers. MOTEL BROWN is apparently still working on their debit CD at Archer’s in Colchester. The STRANGEFOLK disc that came out of there sounds so nice that another studio owner in town said it’s one of the best local albums sonically that he’s ever heard. That could explain why JOEY SOMMERVILLE and DAVID DAVINCHI are mixing and mastering their projects for SOJO MUSIC at the house that Dan built. JON FISHMAN is completing the second J. WILLIS PRATT album out there too. JOE EGAN will soon be mastering the LIVE FROM CLUB METRONOME project that was recorded on the scene by LOW TECH’s GUS ZIESING. Folks all working together like this just gets me all warm and gushy inside.
Write to us with your exploits. We want to know everything about you. Especially your favorite color. Send pictures, too. NEXT, GOOD CITIZEN, PO Box 5373, Burlington, Vermont 05402. Rock on there little doggy.
