The new album from Burlington’s WIDE WAIL is amazing. I was lucky enough to get an advance cassette of it and it's been hard to listen to anything else. Former Newport residents ROCKETSLED have become hands down the most brutal act in Vermont. They’ve just finished recording out at the new Eclipse and word on the street calls the project (probably a six song compact disc) a killer. PHOOKA was also out at Eclipse recording three songs with Club Fib’s Brad Searles helping out. One of the songs they recorded is a cover of “crayons” by the Death Cows (Trevor Tassey Ayer’s pre- Velvet Ovum band with the Fags drummer Dana Shephard.) The recently reunited TWELVE TIMES OVER hit Low Tech Studio recently to record some new songs. Featuring post- Slush Denny Donovan, Chin Ho!’s Dave Barnett, Colorblind’s drummer Eric Sherman and Sterling and man-about-town Osborne on vocals. 12XOver has supergroup written all over it. I heard the rumor that DAVINCHI laid down a few tracks for a single out at Dan Archer’s studio. Young punkers JESUS NUT have been working on an album down at Low Tech that should be out this summer. The new one from the PANTS is out. It’s called Fred Sex and it’s going to make superstars out of Tommy Law and company.
Bout’, time. RACHEL BISSEX has a new disc out on Waterbury’s Alcazar Records as we speak, and they’re also re-releasing GORDON STONE’s 1981 album Scratchin’ the Surface. The GORDO STONE SEXTEX will have a brand new release in the fall, also on Alcazar PHISH has a new live album out on Elektra. Though they’re no longer together, SNOWPLOW just had a song show up on nationally released Descendents tribute disc. Still waiting for the new CD from THE FAGS. They were better than I’ve ever seen them at the Good Citizen Party on May 4. Jason and Chris have brought a lot to the band. The new tape from EEF is out and features a while self recorded live at Last Elm Café. They did an acoustic show with CHIN HO! And four-tracked the whole thing. Speaking of CHIN HO!, They recorded fifteen new tracks at Eclipse for a whole new album due in September. Word has it that our pals in SLUSH will be heading to Canada tis summer to record a new album for fall release. DISCIPLES have a new disc out June 2 that was recorded at Granville’s Noteworthy Studios. A lot of nice work is starting to come out of there. Mister MARTIN GUIGUI has a new project set to hot this fall. The new BELIZBEHA is out and getting a lot of attention. Eef’s MIKE BARRETT has a solo project out now called Brooklyn. TAMAH has a new compact disc just out. THE WARDS have hit the studio for their first recording in many years. The little blue single with “Weapon Factory” on it has been sitting next to my turntable for years, so it's good to hear they’re back. BUCK & THE BLACK CATS have a couple of songs on a nationally released rockabilly collection that they carry down at Tones. Did I hear that BABY’S NICKEL BAG just recorded something at Low Tech Studio? SANDOZE is headed into Eclipse to record a project. HIPLOCK is rumored to be heading into the studio soon. It’s been a long time since their last project. PLAN B is supposed to be mixing their new album. HELL TOUPEE has been working on a recording out at Eclipse, as have the WARRENS. DYSFUNKSHUN has a new bass player named Ben Dunham. He’ll be recording with the band when they put their new album together for fall release. Ben’s replacing Mike Blair who has moved over to SLUSH. Famous blues dude BLUE FOX and the ROCKIN’ DADDIES have been down at Low Tech laying down tracks for an upcoming release. LINDY PEAR (featuring Bob from Hover) recorded five songs with Gus Ziesing at the board. The rappers from Belizbeha call themselves DA NUMBSKULLS and they’ve been working on a project for quite a while now. A group called TWILIGHT IDOLS (possibly formerly known as the LIMIT) has recorded five original songs for future release. A women’s group known as MIDDLE GROUND recently recorded a project. A singer/songwriter from the Bristol area known as TOM VANACORE was at the Low Tech recently working on a project with members of the NEW NILE ORCHESTRA . The NNO has a new album, reviewed this issue. It’s amazing stuff. Also look for an album by LEWIS FRANCO, a singer/songwriter who recently recorded a ten song project of original material at Low Tech. heard that LAMSBREAD has been in the studio. An industrial project called HEXDUMP is in stores now. I’m sure we’re missing a ton of projects, but don’t you already feel overwhelmed? We told you there was a lot of music going on around here. Do us a favor: Buy it. Never underestimate your importance to your local musicians. Without you…See you next time.
This new column will be a rambling exorcism of gossip and innuendo regarding what bands are doing what and when and where. Write us and let us know what you’re doing. Or don’t and whine when you're not in it.
