This column claims to know everything and everyone, and if you're not in it then you obviously don't exist. There. Actually, a lot of the artists listed here have contacted Good Citizen and let us know what's happening in their band's world.
San Gordon, formerly of Virginia & the Wolves, has been out at Eclipse recording and mixing tracks for a CD to be released in January. She's been living in Austin, Texas, recently and plans to spend the next couple of months traveling around the midwest before releasing the new album. Guest stars on the album include Gene White and Andy Sacher of Breakaway, the ubiquitous Gordon Stone, and Bill Mullins of Chin Ho!
Speaking of that band of freaks, Chin Ho! has been down at Low Tech mixing trucks for the Live from Club Metronome project that was recorded at the club last summer during the Vermont Cares benefit weekend and will feature Belizabeha, Wide Whale, Invisible Jet and others. We hear that a CD will be in stores this spring.
A lot of Burlington bands from the jazz and acid jazz communities are recording tracks right now for the upcoming Good Citizen: Soundtrack to the 'Zine Volume Two. Baby's Nickel Bag was down at Low Tech working on their song, and Belizabeha has written a brand new song called "Good Citizen" for inclusion on the disc. They debuted the song recently at Club Toast to a now-typical jam-packed crowd and folks have been talking about it ever since. Very cool. Viper house will be at Low Tech in early October to work on their track. Famous Potato's demi-god David Kamm has been working on an upcoming solo project recently. This man is an amazing musician and we're holding our breath for new music. Hurry it up, dude.
Blues artist Derek Semler, who was an original member of the N-Zones, has been working on a project at Low Tech. Elektra recording artists Dude of Life are laying tracks at band guitarist Dan Archer's studio in Colchester. Members of Phish are again participating, and drumming dude John Fishman has been there producing a new album for Vermonter J. Willis Pratt.
The recording studio down at Tones has had the Fags in working on their long-awaited CD. Sleep Crash is due to record there soon. Science Fixion has been working on their forthcoming CD at Archer Studio. Slacker country band Steve has been recording. Rumor has it that The Pants may have a tape out soon that was recorded live at the Last Elm Cafe. A band out of South Burlington called Red Cloud has been working down at Tones, too, with Brad Searls and Paul Jaffe behind the boards. The band members are all high school students and members of the South Burlington Jazz Ensemble and Combo.
Phish's Page McConnell has been working on a movie soundtrack at Archer. Slush recorded a new full length album at Archer with Canadian shaper of the stars Glen (Wide Wail, Envy) Robinson. It is absolutely amazing and one of the heaviest albums we've ever heard come out of this area. They're currently shipping it to labels.
New CD projects are due to start out at Archer with Strangefolk, one of the hardest working bands around, and long-running Motel Brown. Looking forward to hearing both of these projects. Dysfunkshun has a new CD coming out on the Good Citizen Records label. They've been evolving very quickly as a band and knocking audiences dead recently. The new album is called Home on the Range and we all like it very, very much. Joe Egan said that Hiplock was at Eclipse for their farewell recording. Apparently the long-running band has decided to call it quits. Jesus Nut has been at Eclipse, too. Gus at Low Tech said that Yankeepotroast, featuring former Born That Way guitarist Bones Blankenship, has been recording down at his room with a view at Union Station.
And Brad Searles' new band Starlight Conspiracy, which features former Slush and Twelve Times Over guitarist Denny Donovan and sleep crashes Sean Flanagan, has been writing and recording at Tones while they talk with potential vocalists. And we're still waiting for the new Rocketsled to actually appear in stores, but allegedly it'll be available by the time you read this. It's called 71 Nova and it rips. They played some of the songs from the album (along with some wild new compositions) live at Eclipse for the Good Citizen Radio Hour.
We also just recorded the soon-to-be famous Wide Wail for the program. We do interviews and a live concert thing, just like those big glossy syndicated programs that sell bands just like butter. Look for the show later this fall on a radio station near you.
Hey, you too can be this cool. Just let us know what you're up to and we'll try to remember to include it. Write to us at Next, Good Citizen Magazine for the Rich and Exclusive Burlington musicians Club, Attention: Productive Activities Department, Post Office Box 5373, Burlington, Vermont 05402. We hope that every musician in Vermont scrapes together a few pennies and releases their own albums. It doesn't cost much and the whole lo-fi revolution has been built around music that people make and made in their bedrooms and basements. Quit your bitchin' and get going. We'll write about it when you send it to us.
